Statement by Foreign Minister, on the terrorist suicide attack in Israel

May 8, 2002
Japanese

  1. I am deeply shocked with the terrorist suicide attack in the suburbs of Tel Aviv in Israel, on the night of May 7, which caused many fatalities and injuries among innocent civilians. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to the injured.

  2. Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason. We feel indignation at such an act of terrorism aimed at innocent civilians and resolutely condemn it. This act of terrorism is particularly quite deplorable, considering that certain progress has been made thanks to the international efforts to calm down the situation in the region.

  3. Japan once again strongly urges Chairman Arafat and the Palestinian Authority to exert maximum efforts to crack down on the extremists.

  4. Japan, at the same time, urges the Israelis and Palestinians to seek peace through negotiations.
