Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Israeli Incursion into Khan Yunis, a Refugee Camp in Southern Gaza

October 7, 2002

  1. It is deplorable that the Israeli incursion into Gaza city in the early morning of October 7 caused a large number of casualties among ordinary citizens there. The Government of Japan expresses its deep condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to those who have been injured.

  2. The Government of Japan is concerned that the attack conducted by the Israeli Defense Forces will aggravate hatred among the Palestinians against Israelis and will not serve to improving the situation.

  3. At the time when the international community is making a series of endeavors to realize peace, the Government of Japan once again urges both the Israelis and the Palestinians to break the vicious circle of violence, and urges Israel in particular to exercise maximum self-restraint.
