Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the meeting between Chairman Arafat and Foreign Minister Peres

  1. The government of Japan welcomes that the meeting between Chairman Arafat and Foreign Minister Peres which was held on the 26th in Gaza issued a joint communiqué to reaffirm their full commitments to the implementation of the Mitchell Report's recommendations and the Tenet understandings. Japan commends the peace efforts made by Chairman Arafat and Foreign Minister Peres.

  2. Japan hopes that these mutual commitments expressed in this communiqué will be implemented at earliest possible time, which surely leads to ending the violence, rebuilding confidence and resuming negotiations.

  3. Japan, working together with the international community, will actively support peace efforts by the parties concerned.
