Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Statement by Chairman Arafat calling for a Cease-fire

- The Government of Japan welcomes the statement made earlier yesterday by Chairman Yasser Arafat calling to Israel for peace and ordering his security services to implement a cease-fire. Japan also welcomes the steps taken by the Israeli Government in response to this call.
- Japan considers that these decisions are very positive moves. Japan hopes that the momentum created by these moves is fully utilized so that a meeting between Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Chairman Arafat should be held at the earliest possible time.
- Japan wishes that these moves could lead to ending the violence, rebuilding confidence and resuming negotiations in accordance with the Mitchell Report. Japan, working together with the international community, will actively support peace efforts by the parties concerned.
