Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Re-election of President Mohammad Khatami of Iran
June 10, 2001
- The Iranian public participated widely in the presidential election held on 8 June, which was conducted in a democratic atmosphere. President Mohammad Khatami was re-elected with a high level of support from the electorate. Japan takes note of this result with keen interest, as it attests to the strong support which the Iranian people give to the President's reform policies. Mr. Junichiro Koizumi, the Japanese Prime Minister sent his congratulations to President Khatami.
- Japan warmly welcomes and supports President Khatami's efforts for reform and détente with the international community. It took advantage of the occasion of the President's visit to Japan last autumn to promote dialogue with Iran. Japan hopes that the President will persist in his efforts for reform and détente during his second term and that the traditionally friendly relations between Japan and Iran will be promoted further and expanded.
