Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Terrorist Bombing in Tel Aviv

June 2, 2001

  1. The Government of Japan is shocked with the terrorist bombing in Tel Aviv in the late evening on June 1, which caused many fatalities and injuries among innocent civilians. Japan expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to the injured.

  2. Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason. We feel indignation at such an act of terrorism aimed at innocent civilians and resolutely condemn it.

  3. While valuing efforts for cease-fire by the Government of Israel, Japan once again urges all the parties concerned to exert self-restraint in order to prevent further deterioration of the situation. Japan hopes that the parties will continue to work toward early resumption of the peace talks through the implementation of the Mitchell Report and Egypt-Jordan initiative.
