Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Report of the Fact-Finding Committee on the Clashes between the Israelis and the Palestinians

May 22, 2001

  1. Japan welcomes the report of the Fact-Finding Committee and highly appreciates the efforts made by the members of the Committee led by Former Senator George Mitchell.

  2. Japan believes that use of violence will not lead to the solution of pending problems and that the peaceful negotiation is the only realistic option. The report of the Mitchell Committee offers important bases for the Israelis and the Palestinians to end the current violence and return to the peace negotiations. Japan strongly urges the parties to sincerely talk on the items included in the Report as well as the Egypt-Jordan initiative and to reach a common understanding including the schedule of its implementation so that it will be brought to implementation the soonest possible.

  3. Japan will continue to work actively together with the international community to support the parties' efforts for this purpose.
