Statement by Mr. Yohei Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Formation of the New Coalition Government in Israel
March 9, 2001
- On March 7, a new coalition government, headed by Mr. Ariel Sharon, was established in Israel, and Japan welcomes the fact that the political foundation for resuming the Middle East peace talks was laid in Israel by the establishment of the coalition government.
- Japan believes that peaceful settlement through negotiations is the only realistic option in order to achieve a peace in the Middle East. I strongly hope that Israel, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sharon, will make its utmost efforts to bring about a just, lasting and comprehensive peace, taking well into account what has been achieved in the past negotiations.
