Statement by Mr. Yohei Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs on the result of the Special Election for Premiership in Israel

February 7, 2001

  1. Mr. Ariel Sharon, Chairman of the Likud Party, will be the next Prime Minister of Israel as a result of the Special Election for premiership held yesterday. Although the peace process is currently facing great difficulties, Japan believes that a negotiated peace is the only realistic option and strongly hopes that Mr. Sharon, as Prime Minister of Israel, will make his utmost efforts to realize a just, lasting and comprehensive peace, taking well into account what has been achieved in the past negotiations.

  2. Japan will continue to extend its strong support and cooperation to bring about such peace and stability.
