Statement by Mr. Yohei Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs on the result of the Special Election for Premiership in Israel
February 7, 2001
- Mr. Ariel Sharon, Chairman of the Likud Party, will be the next Prime Minister of Israel as a result of the Special Election for premiership held yesterday. Although the peace process is currently facing great difficulties, Japan believes that a negotiated peace is the only realistic option and strongly hopes that Mr. Sharon, as Prime Minister of Israel, will make his utmost efforts to realize a just, lasting and comprehensive peace, taking well into account what has been achieved in the past negotiations.
- Japan will continue to extend its strong support and cooperation to bring about such peace and stability.
