Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the General Election in Bangladesh
October 5, 2001
- Japan welcomes the fact that the general election held in Bangladesh on October 1 was carried out in a generally fair and peaceful manner, as announced by the international electoral observation mission, including Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentarians' Associations Election Observation Team and the United Nations.
- Ballot counting and the re-election process for some constituencies in which election was postponed are still underway. Japan believes that it is important for the election process to be carried out in accordance with relevant rules until final results have been confirmed. Japan also strongly hopes that the democracy in Bangladesh will further progress, following the result of the current general election.
