Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Resumption of Peace Talks in Afghanistan

November 7, 2000

  1. On October 30, Mr. Francesc Vendrell, head of the United Nations Special Mission to Afghanistan (UNSMA) and the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General, received letters from the parties involved in the conflict in Afghanistan (Taliban and the United Front), which express their will to participate in the dialogue for peace in Afghanistan with serious intent and in good faith. Japan welcomes this move as an important step toward a comprehensive peace in Afghanistan.

  2. Japan pays its respect to the United Nations for its tenacious effort to continue dialogue with each faction of Afghanistan and, from the neutral stance, will actively support the UN's work for peace talks.
