Dispatch of Field Study Mission for Assistance to East Timorese Refugees
October 14, 1999
- The Government of Japan will dispatch from October 17 (Sun) to 22 (Fri) to Indonesia, including West Timor, a field study mission, comprising officials of the Secretariat of the International Peace Cooperation Headquarters of the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Defense Agency, to examine the possibility of assistance to East Timorese refugees.
- Because the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) needs to airlift assistance goods for East Timorese refugees in West Timor, the mission is being dispatched so that the related ministries and agencies will be able to start concrete studies on the possible implementation of such an airlift by transport planes of the Self-Defense Forces in accordance with the International Peace Cooperation Law. The Government of Japan will later decide on the transportation of UNHCR goods by SDF planes based upon the result of this mission.
