Emergency Aid to the People's Republic of China for Earthquake Disaster

- On November 24 (Tue.), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance of 200,000 dollars and emergency material aid equivalent to a total of 17,660,000 yen comprising tents, blankets and sleeping mats to the Government of the People's Republic of China, which has sustained an earthquake disaster in Yunnan Province in the south.
- At 7:31 p.m. and 7:38 p.m. (Japan time 8:31 p.m. and 8:38 p.m.) on November 19 (Thu.), two earthquakes of 5.0 and 6.2 intensity on the Richter scale hit the Ninglang county, Yunnan Province in quick succession, leaving great human and material damage: three persons were killed, 1,383 lightly or seriously injured, and about 17,500 houses damaged.
In such a situation, the Government of the People's Republic of China has started its own full-scale relief activities and requested emergency assistance from the Government of Japan.
- The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view, in light of the seriousness of the disaster and the friendly relations with the People's Republic of China.
