Statement by Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura on the Situation in Cambodia

November 13, 1998

  1. The Government of Japan sincerely welcomes the fact that the Cambodian People's Party and the FUNCINPEC Party came to a basic agreement on the establishment of a coalition government at their summit talks held under the auspices of King Norodom Sihanouk this afternoon (November 13). The Government of Japan pays tribute to the strong leadership exerted by the King as the father of his country.

  2. Japan strongly hopes that the functions of the National Assembly will be restored soon and that a new government will be established.

  3. Japan will continue to extend active assistance to support Cambodia's efforts for reconstruction.
