The 22nd Session of the World Heritage Committee, Kyoto, Japan

- The 22nd Session of the World Heritage Committee will be held in Japan, at the Kyoto International Conference Hall in Takaragaike, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto from Monday, 30 November to Saturday, 5 December 1998.
- The Committee will be presided over by His Excellency Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, current Ambassador of Japan to the French Republic, attended by delegates of the 21 states members of the Committee, observers from states parties, the UNESCO Secretariat and so on.
- The World Heritage Committee is an intergovernmental committee which usually holds an annual meeting and is made up of 21 countries including Japan, which was elected from among states parties of the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (The World Heritage Convention). The World Heritage Committee undertakes decisions on properties which should be inscribed on the World Heritage List, and monitors the state of protection of world heritage.
- Japan, for its part, has nominated the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara" for inscription, which will be under deliberation at this year's Committee meeting.
