Japan-US Foreign Minister Telephone Talks

On July 9 shortly after 8 a.m. JST (shortly after 7 p.m. on July 8, EST), telephone talks were held between Minister for Foreign Affairs Hirofumi Nakasone and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton of the United States of America for approximately 15 minutes on the request of Japan.

  1. On the topic of North Korea, Minister Nakasone stated that the launch of ballistic missiles by North Korea in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions is a grave and provocative act that threatens the security of Japan, which cannot be tolerated. Secretary of State Clinton agreed on this point. Both parties also agreed on the importance of the full-scale enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1874. Minister Nakasone also explained efforts in Japan to pass the Act for Special Measures on Cargo Inspection, which was proposed to the Diet on July 7. The two parties also affirmed the continuation of close collaboration between Japan and the US as well as among Japan, the US, and South Korea in order to deal with this issue.
  2. With respect to the situation in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, both parties shared concern over the large number of casualties. They also agreed to continue watching the situation carefully.
  3. Both parties also agreed to continue to actively support the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in light of the appointment of Ambassador Yukiya Amano as the next Director General of the IAEA.
