INITIATIVES IN OTHER AREAS

ARCTIC SCIENCE

The Governments of Canada and Japan will develop collaboration in Arctic science studies in the field of earth science and environmental variations under the Canada-Japan Agreement on Science and Technology Cooperation. The details of this collaboration will be discussed at the Canada-Japan Joint Committee in Ottawa in November .

SPACE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Based on the guidance of Canada-Japan Space Panel, under the Canada-Japan Agreement on Science and Technology Cooperation, several projects have been implemented in space science, microgravity research and earth observation. The International Space Station is expected to provide more opportunities for collaboration, which will yield benefits here on earth.

SOCIAL POLICY RESEARCH

The Governments of Canada and Japan recognize the potential for bilateral cooperation on social policy research.

SOCIAL SECURITY

The two governments will exchange information and views on their respective social security systems at an appropriate time in the future, with a view to considering the possibility of concluding a bilateral social security agreement.

CULTURAL COOPERATION

The Japan-Canada New Century Creators Series, in which leading artists and cultural institutions from both countries work together to create a series of innovative artistic works, will begin extensive touring in Canada and Japan from the fall of 2000.
