Cultural and Educational Exchanges

The oil crisis in 1973 triggered an active exchange of visits between prominent officials from Japan and the Middle East. In particular, there have been frequent ministerial-level visits in recent times.

At the same time, cultural exchanges between Japan and the Middle East have intensified. Cultural exchanges conducted by Japan with other countries include various projects undertaken by diplomatic missions abroad, such as by Japanese embassies, and projects implemented by the Japan Foundation. They cover wide areas such as performances, exhibitions, invitations and dispatches of cultural figures, and support for Japanese studies and Japanese language education. They also include a scholarship system sponsored by the Japanese Government and exchange programs for young people, promoted by the Management and Coordination Agency. In the Middle East, in particular, Japan has established public information and cultural centers in Cairo and Tehran.

Regrettably, there still exists a long way toward achieving genuine mutual understanding between Japan and the Middle East. It is therefore highly desirable to steadily promote exchanges aimed at deepening mutual understanding, particularly in the arena of culture and sports.
