Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Alemán Visits Japan

  1. President Arnoldo Alemán of the Republic of Nicaragua is visiting Japan from Monday, May 8, to Saturday, May 13, 2000

During his visit President Alemán is scheduled to have a summit meeting with Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, as well as hold discussions with Minister for Foreign Affairs Yohei Kono, members of the Diet, and representatives from various government-affiliated agencies and the business sector. An audience with Their Imperial Highnesses the Crown Prince and Princess is also scheduled.

  3. Japan and the Republic of Nicaragua have a long history of friendly relations. In particular, after the end of the civil strife that took place in Nicaragua in the 1980s, Japan actively provided support for democratization and nation-building efforts in the country. Following the destruction caused by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, the Japanese Government dispatched a Disaster Relief Team and extended emergency aid materials and funds to Nicaragua. Today Japan continues to provide assistance to Nicaragua for its recovery from the devastation. The Japanese assistance has warmly been received by the government and people of Nicaragua, and as an expression of gratitude, the country issued a special postal stamps commemorating Japan-Nicaragua friendship in 1999.

  4. The President's visit to Japan is the first in nine years since then President Violeta Chamorro visited in 1991.
