Talks between Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone and UK Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Bill Rammell
May 25, 2009
For about 15 minutes from 5:20 p.m. (JST) on May 25 (Monday), Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone held talks with UK Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Bill Rammell at the margin of the ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Hanoi. The summary of the talks is as follows;
- Minister Nakasone stated that the nuclear test by North Korea was unacceptable as it represents a challenge to the NPT regime, poses a grave threat to the peace and stability of the international community, and violates the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions. Minister Nakasone said Japan had requested that an urgent meeting of the Security Council be convened since the country considers it important for the Council to adopt a resolution that would signal the strong will of the international community. He also stated that the ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting should swiftly issue an independent statement on this nuclear test. Minister Nakasone requested the UK's cooperation in these matters.
- In response, Minister Rammell said that he shared Minister Nakasone's views and that North Korea's action only incites confrontation and isolates itself from the international community. He stated that the UK government considers it necessary for the Security Council to respond in the strongest possible terms regarding North Korea's action and thinks that a Security Council resolution should be adopted. Minister Rammell also agreed that the ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting should issue an independent statement as soon as possible.
