JAPAN - Moldova JOINT PRESS STATEMENT

  1. H.E. Mr. Andrei Stratan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova visited Japan from January 29 to 31, 2008 at the invitation of the Japanese Government.

    Deputy Prime Minister Stratan held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on January 30, where the two Ministers discussed a wide range of issues, including the bilateral relations and global issues of mutual interest.
  2. The two Ministers noted the importance of further enhancing the bilateral relations and promoting the fundamental values such as democracy, freedom, human rights, the rule of law and the market economy.
  3. In this regard, the Japanese side expressed its intention to decide, in the end of February, two grant aid (totaling 500 million yen) for the development of small and medium enterprises and for the improvement of agricultural productivity of underprivileged farmers. The Moldovan side expressed appreciation to the Japanese side for its consistent support for the consolidation of democracy and the transition to a market economy, for poverty reduction through development of the agricultural sector, and for the improvement of health care and medical services.

    The Moldovan side also highly valued Japan's cultural grant aid programs, which have contributed to promoting Moldovan culture and higher education and to nurturing understanding of and friendly feelings toward Japan.
  4. The two Ministers confirmed that the both sides have come to share common recognition on the satisfactory conclusion of negotiations on the draft of the Agreement on technical cooperation between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Republic of Moldova and expressed their determination to accelerate the process toward the signature on the Agreement.
  5. The two Ministers expressed their determination to work together actively for an early realization of the United Nations Security Council reform, including the expansion of both the permanent and non-permanent membership of the Security Council. The Moldovan side reiterated its strong support for Japan's permanent membership of the Security Council, and the Japanese side expressed its appreciation for the support.
  6. Both sides reaffirmed their intention to strengthen dialogue at both bilateral and multilateral levels in order to promote cooperation between Japan and the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM, which started in 2007.
