Diplomatic Relations:
In 1939, the consulate of Japan was opened in Kaunas, however, it was closed down the following year as a result of Lithuania's annexation to the Soviet Union. The new diplomatic relations started in October 1991 following the recognition of Lithuania by the Government of Japan in September. In 1997, Embassy of Japan was opened in Vilnius.
Economic Relations:
The economic relations between Japan and Lithuania in recent years are steadily developing, with exportation from Japan in 2007 amounting to 12.28 billion yen (52.6% increase from the previous year), and importation in the same year from Lithuania amounting to 2.57 billion yen (9.4% increase from the previous year). The main export items from Japan to Lithuania are rubber tires (21.8%), passenger cars (19.6%) and carbon electrodes (10.0%), while the main import items from Lithuania to Japan are furniture including its components (16.7%), linen goods (6.6%), and wheis (6.6%).
