Congratulatory Message from Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the 50th Anniversary of Japan-Iceland Diplomatic Relations

Reykjavik, November 27, 2006
Japanese

Excellency,

Diplomatic relations between Iceland and Japan were established on 8 December 1956 and on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of this event, I would like to express the satisfaction of the Government of Iceland with the development of bilateral relations with Japan during the past decades and convey my appreciation and congratulations to Your Excellency and the people of Japan.

The great geographic distance between Iceland and Japan has not diminished the mutual affinity felt by two island nations dependent on the living resources of the sea and sometimes subject to the destructive forces of nature. This common bond has been strengthened by increasingly frequent governmental and parliamentary contacts, as well as growing cooperation in the areas of commerce, culture and education.

The Government of Iceland is committed to building further on the achievements of the past 50 years and looks forward to continuing the facilitation of mutually favourable relations at all levels.

Sincerely
Geir Haarde
Prime Minister of Republic of Iceland

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
