On February 4, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi sent a message of condolence to President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili on the passing away of Prime Minister of Georgia Zurab Zhvania on February 3.

- On February 3, the Ministry of Home Affairs of Georgia announced that a police guard of Prime Minister Zhvania had found him dead at an acquaintance's residence in Tbilisi, the capital, at around 4:30 AM (local time), and that the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning from a gas stove.
- Along with President Saakashvili and Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Nino Burjanadze, Prime Minister Zhvania was one of the leading figures in the establishment of a new administration in Georgia in November 2003 (known as the Rose Revolution) and had served as the prime minister in the new administration since February 2004.
