Meeting between Mr. Osamu Fujimura, Chief Cabinet Secretary, and H.E. Mr. To Huy Rua, President of the Viet Nam-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association

On Wednesday, May 16, commencing at 2:20 p.m. for around 30 minutes, Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura held a meeting with H.E. Mr. To Huy Rua, President of the Viet Nam-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association, who is visiting Japan, at the Prime Minister's Office. The overview of the meeting is as follows. (Attending on the Viet Nam side was Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang, among others. Attending on the Japanese side was Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Nagahama, among others.)

  1. Opening Remarks
    Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura welcomed Mr. Rua's visit to Japan, and along with expressing gratitude for the large amount of support received from Viet Nam at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake, he explained that Japan is steadily recovering.

  2. Bilateral Relations
    Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura said that in recent years the relationship between Japan and Viet Nam as strategic partners had been deepening and expanding, and that many high-level exchanges of personnel were taking place. He noted that a Japan-Viet Nam Summit Meeting was held last month and that confirmation was made to advance cooperation on a large number of projects. Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura also stated that next year was the “Japan-Viet Nam Friendship Year” and that Japan hoped to strengthen personnel exchanges not only at a high level but also at the citizen level. In response, Mr. Rua expressed gratitude for the increase in the amount of Official Development Assistance (ODA) provided from Japan to Viet Nam despite the Great East Japan Earthquake. Mr. Rua also said that in terms of personnel exchanges, there was a need to strengthen exchanges not only at the national level but also between parliaments and grass-roots organizations.
    Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura and Mr. Rua also shared the view that they would like to utilize the “Japan-Viet Nam Friendship Year” in 2013 as an opportunity to promote personnel exchanges.

  3. Other
    In addition, Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura and Mr. Rua exchanged views on economic relations and economic cooperation, including nuclear power plant construction, rare earth development and Japan's acceptance of nurses and careworkers from Viet Nam.
