Additional Emergency Assistance to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Response to the Flood Disaster

  1. On Tuesday, September 20, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency grant of USD 10 million to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan as additional assistance to the flood damage from unprecedentedly heavy rain, in response to the UN Rapid Response Plan launched on September 18. Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Japan, conveyed this decision to Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar, Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, at the Japan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers' meeting held on September 20 in NY.

  2. Pakistan has been hit by heavy rain since the beginning of August, which caused floods in the Sindh and Balochistan provinces, forcing many people to evacuate by destroying houses and others as well as submerging agricultural land. According to the UN, as of September 18, 233 people were reported dead and the total number of those affected could be approximately 5.4 million.
