Meeting between Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura and Hon. Mr. Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal

On Thursday, February 2, Mr. Osamu Fujimura, Chief Cabinet Secretary, held a meeting with Hon. Mr. Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, who is visiting Japan. An overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha’s visit to Japan, and said that while he had heard his visit was for a medical operation, he believed that the bilateral friendship had been deepened through meetings with Minister for Foreign Affairs Koichiro Gemba and others. Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura once again expressed gratitude for the blankets and other support Japan received from Nepal following the Great East Japan Earthquake.

  2. Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha said that Nepal and Japan had a unique relationship, and that the support from Nepal for the earthquake victims was very small compared to the assistance Japan has extended thus far, but that Nepal wished to provide further support to Japan in any way possible. He said he was confident that Japan would surely recover, and that he was praying for the earliest recovery.

  3. Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura said he hoped that the on-going peace process and the constitution drafting would be completed by the deadline of this coming May, and that Japan wished to continue to support Nepal’s development and stability, including in the area of infrastructure development.

  4. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha said Nepal was currently at a historic juncture and facing various problems, but he believed that, based on the agreement among the major political parties, the peace process and the constitution drafting would soon be successfully completed, and he stated that Nepal looked for Japan’s assistance.
