Signing of the Instrument of Accession and depositing of the Instrument of Ratification of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia

- The Government of Japan signed the instrument of accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia and deposited the Instrument of Ratification for that Treaty with Secretary-General Ong Keng Yong of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Friday, July 2, 2004.
- This Treaty aims to promote peace, friendship and cooperation in Southeast Asia and stipulates general principles for cooperation in economic, social and other sectors.
The conclusion of this Treaty by Japan is recognized as significant in indicating symbolically that Japan has the intent and policy of developing amicable and cooperative relations with the nations of Southeast Asia into even closer and more constructive ones in the future.
- This treaty came into effect on June 22, 1976 and 13 nations have become signatories as of June 1, 2004 (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Papua New Guinea, Laos, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Myanmar, China and India).
This treaty came into effect regarding Japan as of today with the deposit of the Instrument of Ratification with the Secretariat of ASEAN.
