Japan wishes to host Seminar on Energy Security in Asia.
1. Objective:
- To foster deeper understanding of the energy situation in Asia
- To examine possible areas of cooperation in the field of energy
- To strengthen the energy security in Asia
2. Date and Venue:
March 2002 (One day) in Tokyo (Further details to be decided)
3. Participants:
Energy policy makers from ASEAN+3 countries (One from each country) and speakers of each session will be invited to the Seminar. The Seminar will be open to government officials, researchers of energy institutes and businessmen from ASEAN+3 and other countries.
4. Agenda:
The draft agenda for the Seminar is currently being prepared by the Secretariat. Suggestions from participating countries which fall within the scope of overarching theme of the Seminar - ASEAN+3 energy cooperation - are welcome.
5. Background:
Foreign Minister Tanaka emphasized the importance of strengthening energy security in Asia at the ASEAN+3 Foreign Ministers Meeting in July 2001. Energy cooperation is one of the areas which was specified in the recommendations of the East Asia Vision Group to be presented to the leaders of ASEAN+3 at the upcoming ASEAN+3 Summit Meeting. This Seminar will hopefully contribute to the materialization of some of the aforementioned recommendations and provide additional material for consideration.
