Recent Trends

President Henri Konan Bedie, who swept the board in the October 1995 presidential election, was ousted in December 1999 by military ruler General Robert Guei. General Guei installed a transitional government in January 2000 and has promised to return the country to democracy with fair and open elections, but has given no timetable. President Henri Konan Bedie officially visited Japan between June 28 and July 2, 1999
