Recent Trends
Conflict broke out between the present president, Mr. Sassou Nguesso, and the former president, Mr. Lisouba, in June 1997 over the presidential election which was to take place in July 1997. After the end of the conflict in October 1997, the reconstruction of the country was made progress. However, around the end of year 1998, another conflict began among militias of the former government and the present government. As of December 1999, there has been signing of armistices between the national force and the militias.
