Recent Trends
The political situation remains fairly stable after the presidential election in October 1997 in which President BIYA was reelected for the next seven years. Cameroon's relations with Equatorial Guinea may become strained as a dispute develops over oil resources in undemarcated areas of the Gulf of Guinea. Generally speaking, Cameroon's economy goes well, and real GDP is forecast to increase by 4.9% in 1999/2000 and 5.1% in 2000/2001. Japanese economic cooperation is focused on both technical and grant cooperation in the fields of clean water supply, primary education, etc.
