Symposium on the International Humanitarian Law
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Japanese Red Cross Society will co-host the Symposium on the International Humanitarian Law on Saturday 26 March 2005.
Japan acceded to the Additional Protocols of the Geneva Conventions on August 31, 2004. Japan's accession to the Additional Protocols, a quarter century after its adoption, was made possible through the enactment of the Emergency Legislations along with the completion of domestic implementation of the Geneva Conventions.
Under the United Nations Charter, war in classical meaning is no longer tolerated but armed conflicts still happen. International Humanitarian Law, which is intended to reduce casualties and protect the victims in armed conflicts, assumes all the more important role to play.
Against these backgrounds, this symposium aims to promote better understanding of the purposes and contents of the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols and to provide a forum to discuss the challenges facing International Humanitarian Law today.
