ASEAN+3 Countries to Discuss Energy Security in Asia
- The Seminar on Energy Security in Asia will be hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday 4 March 2002 at the Akasaka Prince Hotel in Tokyo.
- Panelists representing 10 ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries, plus the People's Republic of China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea will participate in this Seminar. Energy experts, representatives of energy industries and other people related to energy both in Japan and from overseas totaling about 200 will also attend the Seminar. Professor Akihiko Tanaka of the University of Tokyo will serve as the moderator of the Seminar. During the Seminar, speeches will be given by approximately fifteen people including Mr. Robert Priddle, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Dr. Ria Kemper, Secretary-General of the Energy Charter Secretariat, Dr. Taro Nakayama, Member of the House of Representatives (Former Minister for Foreign Affairs; Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Research Commission on Foreign Affairs; Chairman of the Parliamentary League for the Promotion of the Asian Energy Community) as well as energy experts from around the world will discuss various topics with the panelists.
- The objective of the Seminar is to consider issues on the strengthening of energy security in Asia. The Seminar is expected to provide an overview of the energy situation in Asia and then to discuss the issue of energy cooperation in the framework of ASEAN+3.
- This Seminar will be held based on the proposal made by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on 5 November 2001 at the ASEAN+3 Summit Meeting that the Seminar on Energy Security in Asia be held in Japan in March 2002 in order to advance cooperation among ASEAN+3 countries on the strengthening of energy security in Asia, which enjoyed the support of the ASEAN+3 leaders.
