Japan-US Bilateral Summit Meeting

Prime Minister Aso, who is visiting L'Aquila, Italy to attend the G8 Summit, had a meeting with President Obama for approximately 25 minutes at the working dinner on Wednesday July 8. The outline of the meeting was as follows:
1. North Korea
Both leaders confirmed that there has been progress in Japan-US cooperation concerning the North Korean issues and cooperation in the international community under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1874. In addition, recognizing this issue as a high priority for both countries, they agreed on the importance for both countries to work closely together on this issue. Prime Minister Aso pointed out that the missile developments by North Korea is a major threat that directly affects the security of neighboring countries such as Japan. In this context, the two leaders confirmed the importance of bilateral cooperation in the area of security and defense and the validity of deterrence by the United States. They also agreed to cooperate even closer for a comprehensive solution to issues concerning North Korea including the abduction, nuclear and missile issues.
2. Climate Change
Prime Minister Aso praised the President's leadership in the Major Economies Forum. Both leaders agreed that Japan and the US will work together closely toward a successful COP 15, based on the shared view that climate change is a challenge facing all in the international community.
3. IAEA
Both leaders confirmed to work closely in the area of nuclear non-proliferation through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
