The 2nd Kyoto International Seminar on "Sustainable Growth in the Asia-Pacific Region: Deepening Economic Interdependence and Risk Management"

  1. Following the Kyoto International Conference on "Sustainable Growth in the Asia-Pacific Region" last year, the 2nd Kyoto International Seminar on "Sustainable Growth in the Asia-Pacific Region: Deepening Economic Interdependence and Risk Management", co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and Kyoto University (with the support of Kansai Economic Federation) was held on 25-26 October 2007. The Seminar was attended by some 40 experts [PDF] from major economies and research institutes in the Asia-Pacific Region including Japan, international organizations and Japanese businesses, etc. Seminar participants discussed challenges for sustainable growth in the Asia-Pacific Region and EiSMAP, an information-sharing mechanism necessary to address these challenges (Agenda [PDF]).
  2. Mr. Kyung Tae LEE, President of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), and Mr. Norihiko SAITO, Vice-President of Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc., made keynote speeches in the Opening Session on October 25th. In the same evening, a reception was hosted by Mr. Yasuhide NAKAYAMA, Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Japan.
  3. Roundtable sessions attended by the experts were held on the 26th, and issues including the current structural changes in trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific Region, constraint factors for sustainable growth in the region, appropriate risk management policies, information gaps caused by globalization, indicators to understand the sustainability of the regional economies, and modalities of the information-sharing mechanism (EiSMAP) were discussed (presentations were made by the participants).
