Japan-Indonesia Summit Meeting (Overview)

The following is an outline of the Japan-Indonesia Summit Meeting that took place on October 26 at the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Los Cabos, Mexico, when Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi met with Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

1. Antiterrorism Measures

(1) Prime Minister Koizumi made the following statements:

(a) I would like to express heartfelt condolences regarding the recent bombing incident in Bali, Indonesia. The killing of many innocent people is unforgivable.

(b) The cooperation of all countries is necessary in order to ascertain the location of terrorists and eliminate their hiding places. Terrorists are targeting areas where vigilance is weak. While there are many difficulties in cracking down on terrorists within Indonesia, cooperation with regard to antiterrorism measures is necessary.

(c) The problems of smuggling and piracy are not unconnected to terrorism.

(2) In response, President Megawati made the following statements:

(a) I would like to express gratitude for the words of encouragement from Japan and the rest of the world on the occasion of the incident in Bali. That incident has inflicted suffering on the people of Indonesia.

(b) I have taken strict measures toward those who wield violence. A long period of time is required for the fight against terrorists. While investigations will entail hardships, the terrorists will absolutely be found.

(c) Japan and Indonesia have a long friendship. In the years to come, it will be necessary to cooperate in various areas, such as taking measures to combat the smuggling of goods and people. Indonesia has experience in taking measures against terrorists. Once the location of terrorists is known, the issue of terrorism can be solved through bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Indonesia will make efforts toward tackling this difficult issue.

(d) Indonesia is extremely grateful for the support of the Japanese Government for the response to terrorism. The dispatch of DNA profiling experts is greatly appreciated.

2. Japan's Support to Indonesia
