Funding for the Japan Platform (JPF)

March 11, 2005

  1. The Government of Japan decided on March 11 (Fri) to contribute 500 million yen of additional funding to the NGO units comprising the Japan Platform (JPF), with the aim of strengthening their activities such as the provision of assistance in response to the damages caused by the major earthquake off the coast of Sumatra and the tsunami in the Indian Ocean as well as assistance to Sudan.

  2. The funding for the JPF will be used to enable JPF-affiliated NGOs (non-governmental organizations) to carry out promptly such activities as the procurement of necessary goods and materials and the setting up of a local framework when engaging in emergency humanitarian assistance activities including the provision of secondary assistance for damage caused by the earthquake and the tsunami that occurred off the coast of Sumatra and assistance to Sudan. This funding is expected to reinforce the foundation of Japan's emergency humanitarian assistance and promote visibility of Japanese NGOs' contribution extended to those afflicted by disasters and conflicts.

  3. The Government of Japan has been contributing government funds to the NGO units since 2001, which have being utilized effectively for emergency humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Liberia.
