2000 Global Youth Exchange (GYE) Program

1. General Theme

"The Environment Surrounding Young People-What Should We Do Toward the 21st Century"
(Aim)
The development of young people-the people that will shoulder the responsibilities of the next generation-is a serious issue for ensuring a sustained, developing society in all countries. To realize a society of peace without violence, it is especially incumbent upon us to exert further active efforts in all areas toward the education of young people. Focusing on the environment surrounding young people, in this part of the Program the participants will discuss the approaches that should be taken to address the development of young people in the 21st century.

2. Dates and Schedule

29 February - 12 March 2000 (13 days)
(The Public Symposium will be held on the afternoon of Friday, 10 March 2000 at the United Nations University in Aoyama, Tokyo.)

3. Venues: Tokyo, Okayama, Kyoto

4. Participants and Countries (tentative)

(1) Participants: Approximately 50 persons from the following countries who are interested in this year's theme and who are aged 35 or below (including around 10 Japanese nationals).
(2) Participating countries (one participant from each country)
Asia: Republic of Korea, Mongolia, China, Myanmar, Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh
America: United States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Colombia
Europe: Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Iceland, Belgium, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Slovakia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Czech Republic
Russia and NIS: Russia, Belarus, Armenia
Oceania: Australia, New Zealand
Middle East: Syria, Jordan, Iran, Oman
Africa: Tanzania, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana

5. Session Themes

(1) Session 1: The Status and Change of the Socioeconomy: Issues Affecting Young People
(Aim)
Participants will discuss the issues affecting young people in all countries and the impact of the current socioeconomy and the changes taking place therein.

(2) Session 2: The Role of the Home, School and Local Community
(Aim)
Participants will consider the role played by the home, school, local community and other areas in addressing the issues affecting young people.

(3) Session 3: The Role of Government, NGOs and the International Community
(Aim)
Participants will discuss how governments should address the development of young people, what can be done at the international level, and other relevant issues in the efforts to build a society of peace without violence.
