Tokyo's Bid for Hosting 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games

1. Tokyo has placed a bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
2. The three other candidate cities are Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, and Madrid. The final decision will take place on October 2, 2009, at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen.
3. At a Cabinet Meeting on September 11, 2007, it was stated, "The hosting of the Olympic Games is of great significance as it creates international goodwill and promotes sports, along with other effects." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan is actively backing Tokyo's effort to host the Olympic Games through initiatives occurring both inside and outside Japan.
