Statement by the Chief Cabinet Secretary on the Visit to Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the United Kingdom by Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan

Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan made an Official Visit to Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the United Kingdom.

Their Majesties traveled for 10 days from 21st May, and returned to Japan on 30th safe and sound.

During their stay in Sweden, Their Majesties attended Linnaeus Tricentenary Celebrations, and were warmly welcomed by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf and Her Majesty Queen Silvia, who made a visit to Japan as State Guest in March this year.

Their Majesties also visited Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania for the first time. In each country, Their Majesties were cordially and respectively received by the President of Estonia and Mrs. Ilves, the President of Latvia and Mr. Freibergs, and the President of Lithuania and Mrs. Adamkiene.

In the United Kingdom, Their Majesties attended the Ceremony of Linnaeus Tercentenary Anniversary Celebrations. Their Majesties attended the Dinner held by Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II.

They heartily enjoyed opportunities of exchanges with people of these countries.

It is truly a matter for congratulation that a great contribution has been made to the advancement of friendly relations between Japan and these countries by Their Majesties' visit.

It is expected that, this visit will strengthen friendly relationship with these countries even further in future.
