Deputy Press Secretary Ms. Naoko Saiki: Good afternoon, and Happy New Year to you. I would like to start with a few announcements.
Ms. Saiki: First, on Foreign Minister Gemba’s visit to Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates from 5-12 January. In fact, he left Narita just about 30 minutes ago. The Foreign Minister intends to strengthen the existing friendly relations with these countries through consultations with his counterparts and other senior officials on regional issues and measures to deepen cooperation for the stability and prosperity of the region.
Ms. Saiki: Second, on the situation in Fiji. Japan welcomes that the Government of the Republic of Fiji has decided to end the Public Emergency Regulations from 7 January and to commence the nationwide consultation process for the new constitution in February. This decision is based on the Strategic Framework for Change, the road map for democracy issued by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji in 2009. We sincerely hope that Fiji will continue to take concrete actions towards free and fair elections no later than 2014 and to this end, we intend to maintain close dialogue with the Fijian authorities.
Ms. Saiki: Third, and last, on the meeting between Israel and the Palestinians. Japan welcomes the meeting between Israel and the Palestinian Authority held in Amman, Jordan on 3 January as a positive step toward progress of the Middle East peace process. Japan strongly hopes that the meeting will lead to early resumption of the direct negotiations between both parties.
Now, I would be happy to take any questions you may have.
Any questions?
I see none. So this concludes today’s conference. Thank you.
