  1. Upcoming visit to Japan by President George W. Bush of the United States of America

Assistant Press Secretary Jiro Okuyama: Good afternoon. Today I have three items to announce.

Firstly, President George W. Bush of the United States of America will visit Japan on 17 and 18 October prior to his visit to Thailand to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting.

During his stay in Japan, he will have an exchange of views with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in an informal manner. We expect that this exchange of views will touch upon bilateral relations between Japan and the United States and major international topics such as Iraq and North Korea.

  2. Upcoming visit to Japan by President Vicente Fox Quesada of the United Mexican States

Mr. Okuyama: Secondly, I would like to follow up on the announcement which we made on 30 September on the state visit of H.E. Mr. Vicente Fox Quesada, President of the United Mexican States, and Mrs. Fox.

On 15 October there will be a lunch hosted by Japanese economic organizations and there will be a state banquet at the Imperial Palace.

On 16 October, Prime Minister Koizumi will have talks with President Fox followed by the signing ceremony of the joint declaration at the Prime Minister's Office. At noon, Prime Minister Koizumi will host a luncheon for President Fox. President Fox will have a press conference at National Press Club in the afternoon of the same day.

In the afternoon of 17 and morning of 18 October, he will visit the Kansai region and leave Japan around noon on the 18th.

He will have two ministerial members in his accompanying suite, namely Dr. Luis Ernesto Derbez Bautista, Minister of Foreign Relations, and Mr. Fernando Canales Clariond, Minister of Economy.

With President Fox's state visit we hope to achieve three things: Firstly, to reaffirm friendly cooperative relations, which we call strategic partnership, with Mexico which is the tenth largest economy in the world and has been going through remarkable development in recent years. Secondly, we would like to promote bilateral economic relations through an economic partnership agreement. Thirdly, we would like to have a dialogue on international issues and global issues and to expand our scope of cooperation on these issues wherever possible.

This will be the third meeting between Prime Minister Koizumi and President Fox following their meeting on the fringe of the APEC meeting in Los Cabos in October 2002 and their meeting in June 2001 on the last visit of President Fox to Japan.

Mr. Okuyama: Thirdly, Prime Minister Koizumi today sent a message on the occasion of the first anniversary of the terrorist bombing incident on the island of Bali, Republic of Indonesia which resulted in more than 200 victims.

Prime Minister Koizumi renewed his condolences to the victims and the remaining family members. He appreciated Indonesia's serious endeavors in the fight against terrorism and expressed his hope that Indonesia would continue to actively tackle the issue of terrorism in the situation in which terrorist threat remains serious in the Southeast Asian region. He also expressed his intention to continue to cooperate with Indonesia and actively extend assistance to Indonesia in the fight against terrorism on the basis of Japan-Indonesia Joint Announcement on Fighting against International Terrorism, which Prime Minister Koizumi signed with President Megawati Soekarnoputri on the occasion of the state visit of Mrs. Megawati to Japan in June this year.
