  1. The 11th Japan-European Union Summit

Deputy Press Secretary Joji Hisaeda: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I have a few announcements to make today.

First, the 11th Japan-European Union (EU) Summit will be held on 8 July at the Prime Minister's Official Residence in Tokyo. The Summit will be attended on the Japanese side by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and others, and on the EU side by Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Prime Minister of Denmark, Presidency of the EU, Mr. Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, and others.

At the Summit, the leaders of Japan and the EU will put forward observations on their domestic situations and exchange views on wide-ranging issues, including the present international situation and promotion of Japan-EU cooperation through the implementation of the "Action Plan for EU-Japan Cooperation," which was issued last December at the 10th Japan-EU Summit.

  2. Implementation of additional asset-freezing measures

Mr. Hisaeda: Second, I hope each of you has received the press release just issued a few moments ago. The Government of Japan has decided to take asset-freezing measures, such as restrictions on payment (remittance) and capital transactions on the basis of the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Law against thirteen entities, namely: Abud Nidal Organization, Gama'a al-Islamiyya (GI), Kahane Chai (Kach), Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK), Palestine Liberation Front (PLF), Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), Revolutionary People's Liberation Army/Front/Party (DHKP-C), Shining Path (SL), Al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigade, Babbar Khalsa, and International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF).

These are additional measures on top of similar asset freezing measures that the Government of Japan has so far implemented since the occurrence of the 11 September terrorist attack last year. You may find some background information on those measures in your handouts.
