  1. Emergency assistance to the Republic of Cuba for hurricane disaster rehabilitation

Press Secretary Norio Hattori: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I have two announcements to make this afternoon. The first one is with regard to our emergency assistance to the Republic of Cuba for hurricane disaster rehabilitation.

Today, the Government of Japan decided to extend, through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), US$480,000 in emergency grant aid to Cuba, which has sustained great damage from Hurricane Michelle.

  2. Appointment of Ambassador in charge of International Counter-Terrorism Cooperation

Mr. Hattori: My second announcement is on the appointment of the Ambassador in charge of Counter-Terrorism Cooperation.

At this morning's Cabinet meeting, it was decided to appoint former Ambassador to the State of Israel Hiroshi Shigeta to the post of Ambassador in charge of International Counter-Terrorism Cooperation. Having just returned from his mission in Israel, Ambassador Shigeta will henceforth take charge of all matters within the Ministry concerning counter-terrorism.

  3. Follow-up question on emergency assistance to Cuba

Q: The hurricane took place in November. It is already March. The UNDP did not ask for assistance before? They just set up the trust fund?

Mr. Hattori: Yes, Hurricane Michelle struck Cuba last November, and since then the UNDP, together with other UN organizations, has been working to formulate a program of assistance for Cuba. That is the reason why it has taken some time for Japan to come up with concrete assistance for Cuba. Our assistance will be delivered through the UNDP as part of the overall program of assistance to Cuba.
