Japanese
- On Tuesday, April 10, the 50th anniversary (the 25th Plenary Session) of the United States-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (CULCON) will be held in Tokyo. This meeting will be attended by knowledgeable people from both countries for a discussion on cultural and educational exchange, and will aim to propose and report needed policies for the governments and societies of the two countries.
- The chairs of this plenary session will be assumed by Mr. Minoru Makihara, Senior Corporate Advisor of Mitsubishi Corporation on the Japanese side and by Mr. Thierry Porte, Operating Partner, J.C. Flowers and Co. LLC on the US side. CULCON is composed of 12 panelists on both sides.
- The theme of the discussion this time will be "an investment in the future through education in the broadest sense for further deepening the Japan-US relationship". It is planned that the conference will adopt a joint statement about the strengthening of human resource development and exchanges through education in the broadest sense, ranging from grassroots to inter-universities and academic exchanges, with the understanding that the foundations of the Japan-US relationship require close person-to-person exchanges.
- Prior to the conference, on Monday, April 9, Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs, will host a reception at Iikura House to welcome the CULCON participants.
Reference:
CULCON was established in June 1961 by a joint statement agreed by Prime Minister Ikeda and President Kennedy. Its first meeting was held in Tokyo in January 1962. Ever since then, conferences have been held biannually, alternating between Tokyo and Washington DC.
