APEC Second Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM2), Related Meetings, and Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT)

  1. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Second Senior Officials' Meeting(SOM2) will be held on June 3 (Thu) and 4 (Fri), while the Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) will be held on June 5 (Sat) and 6 (Sun). Both meetings will be held at the Sapporo Convention Center in Sapporo City. In addition, meetings related to SOM2 will be held from May 26 (Wed) to June 2 (Wed) at the Sapporo Prince Hotel and Sapporo Convention Center in Sapporo City.

  2. Ministers Responsible for Trade from the twenty-one APEC member economies will attend the MRT, which will be chaired by Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Masayuki Naoshima, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.

  3. The MRT is the first ministerial meeting hosted by Japan as chair of APEC in 2010. It is an important meeting, as it is tied to the future ministerial meetings covering a variety of fields, which will be held throughout Japan, as well as the Economic Leaders’ and Ministerial Meeting to be held in November in Yokohama.

  4. Senior officials from APEC member economies will attend SOM2, which will be chaired by Mr. Shigeru Nakamura, Ambassador for International Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Hidehiko Nishiyama, Director-General for Trade Policy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Mr. Kenji Hiramatsu, Deputy Director-General, Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Makoto Shiota, Deputy Director-General for International Regional Policy, Trade Policy Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, will also attend as senior officials representing Japan.

  5. At SOM2, senior officials will carry out further discussions regarding the matters presented by Japan at SOM1 (held on February 22 and 23 in Hiroshima City), and will summarize their views in the lead up to the MRT. They will also discuss the assessment of the achievement of the Bogor goals.
