Visit of Mr. Ihor Kohut, Director of the Laboratory of Legislative Initiatives, Ukraine, to Japan

  1. Mr. Ihor Kohut, Director of the Laboratory of Legislative Initiatives (LLI), Ukraine, will visit Japan from December 13 (Sun) to 21 (Mon) at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Kohut heads the leading policy-oriented NGO, LLI, thus contributing to the democratization of Ukraine.

  2. Principal activities of LLI are to provide analysis and proposals on public policy; promote dialogue between the government, administration and civil society; and provide assistance to conducting fair elections. Under the cooperation with the Council of Europe, LLI implements the Ukrainian School of Political Studies (USPS) project, where seminars are organized for the leaders of the next generation such as young politicians, entrepreneurs and journalists for the purpose of developing human resources who share the fundamental values of democracy and human rights. The Government of Japan also supports the USPS project through financial contribution to the Council of Europe as well as by dispatching lecturers.

  3. It is expected that Director Kohut’s visit will contribute to the democratization of Ukraine, while strengthening the close relations between Japan and Ukraine.

The Government of Japan has provided financial assistance through the Council of Europe in 2005 and 2007 (45,000 EUR in each year). In 2009, Japan also provided assistance totaling 45,000 EUR to hold the European Conference of the Schools of Political Studies in Kyiv, Ukraine, which was attended by representatives from schools of political studies based in various European countries including the Ukrainian School. Besides, Japanese experts in the fields of human rights and market economy, Ambassadors of Japan and representatives of Japanese business society in Ukraine participated in sessions at the Ukrainian School as lecturers.
