Japan to Send Observers to the Eleventh Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU Summit)

- Mr. Keitaro Sato, Ambassador in Charge of Peace Building in Africa,
and Special Envoy for UN Reform, and Mr. Kinichi Komano, Japanese Ambassador
to Ethiopia (Permanent Representative to AU), and Mr. Jiro Kodera, Ambassador,
Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations, will attend the Eleventh
Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU Summit) to be
held from June 30 (Monday) to July 1 (Tuesday) in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt,
as observers from the Government of Japan.
- The Summit will be attended by leaders of the 53 African countries and
regions (AU member states), and they will discuss various issues such as
development, as well as peace and security in Africa.
- The Japanese observers will meet African leaders attending the Summit and exchange views on bilateral relations, the regional issues, Japan’s assistance to Africa on the basis of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, and Japan-African cooperation in the international arena including UN Security Council reform.
