Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura to Attend Meeting of Major Economic Countries on Climate Change Hosted by the United States

  1. Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs, will visit the United States from September 26 (Wed) to 30 (Sun) to attend the Major Economies Meeting on Energy Security and Climate Change, hosted by the United States.
     
  2. Based on the speech on the climate change delivered by President George W. Bush of the United States on May 31, the U.S. will hold the meeting, inviting other G8 countries (including the European Commission), Portugal (EU chair country), Australia, China, India, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia and the United Nations.
     
  3. At the meeting, the participants will discuss such matters as the global long-term goal, mid-term national target and programs, and the post-2012 framework including sectoral approaches for the reduction of greenhouse gas emission.  From Japan, Mr. Mutsuyoshi Nishimura, Special Advisor to the Cabinet, and representatives of the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Ministry of Environment will attend the meeting.
